Course Description

Due to the passage of IEEE 1547-2018 commencing 2021, many Distributed Energy Resources, including solar PV, energy storage systems, and natural gas/diesel generators, will be required to communicate with utilities and system operators using communication protocols specified by the IEEE 2030.5-2018 standard. IEEE 2030.5 is a new standard that incorporates TCP/IP, HTTPS, RESTful web services, and is highly optimized to the needs of the energy generators and the utilities and system operators who manage these systems.

Accordingly, DER network design companies and electrical utilities are required to have network engineers and architects who know how to configure, customize, and apply IEEE 2030.5 technology in secure and reliable manner.
This course will provide individuals wishing to become network engineers and architects in the energy business with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to design, configure, and operate DER networks that support rooftop, commercial, and utility-scale energy generation systems.

Course Highlights:

  • Theory of operation
  • Network topology and its relationship to utility operations
  • Roles of 2030.5 system components. Client, aggregate, server
  • Design considerations for 2030.5 networks
  • Necessary certifications and regulatory requirements
  • 2030.5 to Modbus gateways – role of gateways
  • Network security considerations
  • Device security considerations
  • TCP/IP networking fundamentals and best practices
  • Scheduling and timing of installations
  • Commissioning
  • Coordination with operations team
  • Products and available solutions

Course Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the theory of operation of IEEE 2030.5 DER networks
  • Understand network topology and its relationship to utility operations
  • Implement the roles of 2030.5 system components: client, aggregator, server
  • Include necessary guidelines during the design of 2030.5 networks
  • Identify necessary certifications and regulatory requirements
  • Recognize the role of gateways
  • Include appropriate network and device security into design
