Dear SunSpec members and followers,

As the Australian energy market moves towards standardizing its Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), authorities are looking to existing standards to set precedent for future decisions. Of those relevant standards is IEEE® 2030.5™, which defines the communication interface between DER systems and grid operators.

In 2018, SunSpec developed the 2030.5 Common Smart Inverter Profile (CSIP) to fine tune the IEEE 2030.5 communication standard to the requirements of the U.S. DER market. By 2020, we saw the Australian market begin to adapt its own version of the CSIP profile for similar reasons. To support this effort,
SunSpec is working with Standards Australia to develop guidance material for their adoption of IEEE 2030.5. We are also working with experts from the Cybersecurity Cooperative Research Centre (CSCRC) to develop cybersecurity best practices in Australia.

With this movement towards global standardization, SunSpec is proud to announce that we are developing the SunSpec 2030.5 CSIP-AUS Certification Program. We will be celebrating this announcement and providing more information about the program during a webinar on April 26 / April 27 (AEST), which will serve as the kickoff meeting for our Australian Market Advisory Council.

At this meeting, we will cover the following topics:

  • Presentation of the SunSpec 2030.5 CSIP-AUS Certification Program (what’s included, who will get it, how to get it)
  • Discussion about PKI alternatives to address security considerations for Australia
  • The upcoming revision of the IEEE® 2030.5™ standard in 2023
  • The formation of SunSpec Australian Market Advisory Council

If you are interested to work with us on this program, or if you would like to compare ideas with us, please contact Membership@SunSpec.org.

Kind Regards,

Tom Tansy
Chairman

SunSpec & Sandia DER Cybersecurity Webinar:

SunSpec Cybersecurity Certification for IEEE 2030.5 Client Gateways

As cybersecurity concerns enter the forefront of the Distributed Energy Resource (DER) industry, there is a growing need amongst DER equipment manufacturers to adopt standardized best practices for cybersecurity that are backed by industry tested and approved methods. The SunSpec Alliance has anticipated this need, and with the efforts of the SunSpec & Sandia DER Cybersecurity Working Group, is introducing industry's first DER cybersecurity certification for manufacturers.

In this webinar, SunSpec Chairman, Tom Tansy, will share a presentation on the SunSpec Cybersecurity Certification for IEEE® 2030.5™ Client Gateways, including what it protects against, what is included in the initial offering, and how companies can get it.

Speaker: Tom Tansy, Chairman, SunSpec Alliance

Date: April 28, 2022 at 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. Pacific

EverythingEV USA Summit

Connecting utilities with government, charge point operators, and fleets as North America ramps up its EV charging infrastructure roll out.

As EV adoption grows, utilities and other power generators are grappling with the issue of determining the power load needed to charge those vehicles, and how to forecast when—and where—that electricity will be needed. To deal with these new connections the grid infrastructure itself will also need to be upgraded.

At the same time governments, fleet owners and charging infrastructure installers are struggling to work with utilities to establish connections to the grid, navigate new energy charges and tariffs, and finance the energy and charging infrastructure to support EVs.

This two-day event will provide the energy sector and those installing and operating charge-points with insight into new solutions and technologies to manage demand, integrate renewable energy, and maintain the stability of the grid.

Date: June 21-22, 2022, Austin, Texas

SUNSPEC WORK GROUP UPDATES

Gain access to valuable information by becoming a Member of the SunSpec Alliance and joining a SunSpec Work Group. The work groups listed below are currently active and meeting to address the following objectives:
To prepare for the next generation of device integration, the SunSpec (Modbus) Device Interface work group is now working on a RESTful Web Services interface for devices that can be used as an alternative to the traditional Modbus interface.
The IEEE 2030.5 / SAE J3072 EV Charging Profile Work Group published the first draft of the IEEE 2030.5 V2G AC Profile for public comment in February 2022. This comment period closed at the end of March. The next work group meeting will be held on April 26, 2022 at 8 AM Pacific to review the comments that were submitted.
The SunSpec & Sandia DER Cybersecurity Work Group has a full slate of monthly webinars on all aspects of DER security and has convened a sub-group to define requirements for an open source security-readiness assessment tool.
The SunSpec IEEE 2030.5 Conformance Profiles Work Group is now meeting to update the testing procedures for all profiles.
The SunSpec Rapid Shutdown Work Group is refining test procedures and working on a collaborative marketing program to spread the word about open standards.
The Orange Button Work Group is now an open source community that lives on GitHub/Slack and meets every Tuesday at 11 AM Pacific. We are building an open product registry that gives details on every inverter, solar PV module, and battery storage device in the market. Contact Membership@SunSpec.org to participate.
