Wide Area Communication Protocols

The SunSpec Wide Area Communication Protocols initiative encompasses the primary protocols and associated information models in use in the DER industry:

  • IEC 61850
  • IEEE 2030.5 (“SEP2”)
  • IEEE 1815 (“DNP3”)
  • OpenADR

SunSpec team members serve on technical committees associated with these technologies and have a mission to maintain harmonization across protocols. SunSpec is also active on the IEEE 1547 technical sub-committee dealing with communication, the EPRI Energy Storage Integration Council (EPIC), and other development venues.

Please refer to the white paper for an overview of the harmonization efforts that the SunSpec team is undertaking.
