SAN JOSE, Calif., February 9th, 2021— In 2015, 30 members of the SunSpec Alliance formed a technical working group to address the industry-wide need for a standardized data communication solution for PV module rapid shutdown. The mission of the SunSpec Communication Signal for Rapid Shutdown (SunSpec RSD) Working Group was to define a simple, open, multi-vendor, multi-device communication interoperability specification to support rapid shutdown requirements established by NEC 2017 and NEC 2020 690.12 mandates.

Having made significant advancements towards this goal, including the development of the SunSpec Communication Signal for Rapid Shutdown specification and certification program, SunSpec Certified™ RSD receivers can now be applied in solar arrays as single-module, multi-module, and string-level devices and SunSpec Certified™ RSD transmitters can now be applied adjacent to or embedded in inverters or power conversion devices.

On February 9th, 2021, the group published its first whitepaper, coinciding with the completion of a prior art study, which concluded that the SunSpec RSD specification is built upon open and free technology.
