IEEE 1547 is a standard of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers meant to provide a set of criteria and requirements for the interconnection of distributed generation resources into the power grid. This standard is currently being revised to address communication and control requirements—which are brand new to this standard—to support advanced DER functions. Members of the SunSpec Alliance are actively contributing to the revision process. In fact, a face-to-face meeting of the IEEE 1547 working group will take place next week in Florida.
Because data communication is a new topic for many professionals who are participating in the revision of the standard, SunSpec decided to survey its membership and influence group (most specifically fleet operators, equipment manufacturers, and electric utilities) to gauge their understanding of the topic and surface their opinions regarding how far the standard should go in addressing the communication topic. The sole purpose of the research was to improve our understanding; its results have no bearing on the IEEE process, which operates according to its own prescribed rules.
The bottom line is that individuals from 50 companies responded to our request for input and the results are interesting. If you would like to understand more, come to the SunSpec Annual Member’s Meeting on March 15. in addition to sharing the results, we’ll also be surveying the audience on-site and sharing these results as well.
