With the passage of IEEE 1547-2018, as of 2021 nearly all Distributed Energy Resources, including solar PV, energy storage systems, and natural gas/diesel generators, will be required to communicate with utilities and system operators using communication protocols specified by the IEEE 1547 standard. While the application of data communication networks in this field is not new, the inclusion of data communication features in definition of a Distributed Energy Resource (DER) system makes data communication essential to the viability of the system. Accordingly, DER system installation companies are required to have personnel who know how to apply these technologies in a secure and reliable manner.

This course will provide individuals wishing to become network technicians in the energy business with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to install, configure, and operate DER networks on rooftop, commercial, and utility-scale energy generation systems.

This course will help you understand the origins of PV technology; the development of solar PV as an energy generation resource; the value proposition of solar PV and energy storage to the typical U.S. consumer; the data communication technologies and regulatory considerations shaping the emerging energy market; and the job opportunities in this exciting field. It is intended for students interested in exploring employment opportunities in solar PV and energy storage installation, sales, design, finance, and operations positions.

SYSTEM CYBERSECURITY FOR IEEE 2030.5 DER NETWORKS

Duration
6 weeks

This course is an examination of the evolution of DER networks based on the IEEE 2030.5 standard, how this evolution introduces cybersecurity risks, and how these risks can be mitigated. While there are no pre-requisites for this course, students with prior knowledge of DER and/or data communication systems based on TCP/IP protocols will benefit most. It is intended for students who are interested in exploring technical (e.g. cybersecurity, engineering, software, systems management), professional (e.g. architecture, marketing, finance), and operational (e.g. operations & maintenance, sit monitoring) careers in the rapidly growing distributed energy industry. Students will acquire a foundation in the basic cybersecurity concepts that are needed to understand the more detailed considerations associated with securing DER in the grid.
