SunSpec CSIP Test Procedures v1.4 Open for Public Review and Comments

The SunSpec Alliance has published the SunSpec CSIP Conformance Test Procedures v1.4 (TEST Version) for review. This draft release introduces a range of updates designed to expand test coverage, improve protocol conformance and interoperability, and address additional requirements across CSIP, IEEE 1547, and California IOU use cases.
This public review period provides an important opportunity for both SunSpec members and non-members to participate directly in the standards development process by reviewing the proposed updates and providing feedback.
Key Features & Process Updates
Continuous Testing Capability: A new common test setups section maps tests to required configurations, allowing clients to perform continuous testing without needing to restart the server/client or rebuild the resource tree.
California IOU Integration: The test procedures now cover supplementary test cases required by California Investor-Owned Utilities for CSIP-certified devices.
IEEE 1547 Coverage: New functional tests have been added to fill existing gaps and align with IEEE 1547-2018 requirements.
Long Event Testing: New tests cover events initiated by utility DRM servers that run for extended durations, from hours to days.
Mandatory Rules & Corner Cases: Negative test scenarios, corner cases, and mandatory “shall” statements have been expanded to improve protocol conformance and interoperability.
New Tests
The v1.4 TEST Version also introduces several new core, basic control, IEEE 1547, and error/negative tests:
Core Tests
Core 24 – Non-default locations: Tests for non-generic href locations other than standard defaults like Dcap or EDEV.
Core 25 – Optional extensions: Covers optional extension handling.
Core 26 – Large list handling: Tests for managing large end-device lists.
Core 27 – Basic device information: Reads/accesses device information resources to verify IEEE 1547 nameplate data requirements.
Core 28 – Polling resilience: Robust polling resilience testing.
Basic Control & IEEE 1547 Gap Tests
Basic 30 – Mirrored usage point rules: Extended verification for rules related to mirrored meter points.
Basic 31, 32 & 33: Adds missing IEEE 1547 modes, including Watt-Var, Constant Reactive Power, and Enter Service tests.
Error / Negative Tests
Error 3 – Invalid subscription requests: Tests handling when an invalid subscription request is transmitted from the client side.
Error 4 – Malformed HTTP requests: Tests response to malformed HTTP traffic.
