Getting Ready for the Countdown to UL 1741 Certification: The Race to Market – SunSpec Alliance

The Race to Market

As the deadline to IEEE 1547.1 compliance nears, manufacturers of smart inverters will be racing to complete their UL 1741 SB certifications. With 50 companies, 1000 products, and a turn around time of 10-12 weeks to complete functional testing for each one, we anticipate a huge surge in demand for testing time in the Nationally Recognized Test Labs (NRTLs).

By completing SunSpec Modbus Certification now, companies will have the opportunity to get ahead of the rush and expedite their UL 1741 SB certifications before the earliest state compliance dates, which we suspect may be as soon as mid-2022.

In other words, the companies that complete their UL 1741 SB certifications first will gain priority access to sell their products in major markets such as California, Hawaii, New York, and other earlier-adopters of IEEE 1547-2018.

We encourage all members of the SunSpec Alliance to get their SunSpec Modbus-enabled devices certified in order to prepare for UL 1741 SB certification.
