Overview
As the policy landscape shifts, keeping an eye on emerging standards is more than just good practice—it’s strategic foresight. Here are a few key developments SunSpec has highlighted that could shape the DER space in the months ahead:
Cybersecurity Baselines for DERs: In January, the U.S. DOE and NARUC released new interim guidance outlining cybersecurity expectations for DER and distribution system operators. The guidelines emphasize asset visibility, secure configurations, and response protocols—signaling the growing weight of cyber compliance. (Source)
FERC Order 2222 Extensions: While FERC continues its push for DER aggregation in wholesale markets, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) was recently granted an extended timeline until 2030 to fully implement compliance measures. This reflects ongoing structural challenges, though market access for DERs remains a long-term inevitability. (Source)
China’s Rooftop Solar Rules: China’s National Energy Administration issued comprehensive new rules in January to streamline distributed solar interconnection and project oversight starting in May 2025. With 120 GW of distributed PV already deployed, this move ensures stability as penetration deepens. (Source)
Germany and V2G: Germany’s regulatory commitment to bidirectional EV charging is gaining traction, with manufacturers like E3/DC and Ford announcing new infrastructure partnerships across Europe. These moves suggest a clear path for large-scale V2G adoption—a model U.S. utilities are increasingly evaluating. (Source)
