Background
From 2016 to 2018, the U.S. Department of Energy funded a cooperative development agreement with SunSpec to define and develop the Orange Button data exchange standard for solar and storage industries. With funding of approximately $4 million from the DOE and another $4 million in industry contributions ($8M total), SunSpec engaged with 300+ industry stakeholders, developed a solar taxonomy, and delivered a set of application program interfaces that are now available via open source. In 2019, Sandia National Laboratories provided funding to develop taxonomy elements for additional use cases and enhance support for OpenAPI/JSON. In 2020, SunSpec took on the role as sole funding source for Orange Button and steward of the Orange Button developer community.
