The SunSpec Official Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) Provider will deliver high-quality digital certificate provisioning services for Distributed Energy Resources.

SAN JOSE, CA – February 12, 2019 – SunSpec Alliance, the information standards and certification organization for the Distributed Energy Resource (DER) industry, announced Kyrio, a subsidiary of CableLabs®, as the SunSpec Official PKI Provider. Kyrio will deliver Public Key Infrastructure services to global member companies with SunSpec CertifiedTM software and hardware.

The SunSpec Certified PKI program is designed to increase stakeholder confidence in DER communication solutions, including those enabling interoperability of smart inverters, smart PV modules, EV charging, and energy storage. The program’s initial focus is to fulfill California Rule 21 Common Smart Inverter Profile compliance and the rollout of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standard (IEEE Std.) 1547 TM-2018. IEEE 1547 establishes uniform requirements for interconnection of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), such as solar photovoltaics, with the electric power system.

“Kyrio’s role is to manage the implementation of SunSpec Certified PKI security for our members,” said Thomas Tansy, Chairman, SunSpec Alliance. “Kyrio is an expert at designing, governing and managing large PKI ecosystems to ensure device identity and access control for networks supporting millions of connected devices. Their team continues to work closely with us to shape the efficient roll out and execution of this program which will impact potentially millions of DERs under CA Rule 21 and IEEE 1547-2018 mandates.”

Kyrio, a subsidiary of CableLabs, operates one of the largest PKIs in the world for the cable industry and is experienced in providing security solutions and specifications for multi-vendor networks and industry ecosystems. Its PKI establishes a chain of trust across millions of connected devices so that they can be uniquely identified and validated to help prevent unauthorized network access.
