SunSpec Alliance Presents At The Utility Cyber Security Forum, Provides Update On State-Level Cyber Adoption

SunSpec Alliance Chairman Tom Tansy had the privilege of attending and presenting at the 6th Annual Utility Cyber Security Forum during March 19-21 in Chicago. In his talk, entitled “DER Cybersecurity In A Decentralized Grid,” Tansy highlighted the fact that the United States is quickly revising cybersecurity regulations across all 50 states and that manufacturers and operators should get on board now to avoid being shut out when state-level cybersecurity regulations kick in. 

“In its National Cybersecurity Strategy, published exactly one year ago, the Biden administration made it clear that foreign adversaries are attacking critical U.S. infrastructure and that we must be prepared to respond,” Tansy said. “Following guidance provided by the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, many U.S. states, led by California, are actively planning to implement cybersecurity regulations in the near term.” he added.

The point that cybersecurity attacks–on DER, EV chargers, and utility grids–are not theoretical was also made. “DER vendors that do not take cybersecurity seriously are at risk of tarnishing their company’s reputations, losing money, and alienating customers. As highlighted in Wired last summer, bad actors have been very successful at penetrating EV charging station networks and causing havoc. Many are also extracting significant ransom payments. The time for vendors to take action and protect themselves is now,” Tansy concluded.
