San Jose, CA, January 29, 2024. SunSpec Alliance is happy to announce SunSpec Express Test™, a new, fast method for Distributed Energy Resource (DER) manufacturers to earn SunSpec Modbus for IEEE 1547 certification for DER products. Manufacturers apply online at SunSpec.org for the SunSpec Express Test™ program and enroll for a timeslot to have the full test sweep executed within two weeks. For products that comply with the SunSpec Modbus for IEEE 1547 communication standard, testing can be done in 48 hours.

Why This Service Is Needed. SunSpec Modbus is a standard communication interface required by the IEEE 1547-2018 electrical standard for DER. Compliance with IEEE 1547 is validated via UL 1741 SB, a listing needed by DER products installed in the U.S. and Canada. Developing a SunSpec interface, linking it to the electrical functions of a DER product, and evaluating it across a wide range of use cases has proven to be a challenge for manufacturers and their test partners. Testing times grow and interoperability suffers when SunSpec interfaces are not fully vetted.

Value Proposition and Cost. This SunSpec program dramatically increases DER interoperability, saves engineering time by removing a major bottleneck in the UL 1741 SB test regime, and enhances the user experience of new DER products. Pricing for SunSpec Express Test™ is $5,000.

For pre-testing products, a key step for manufacturers, SunSpec members may purchase SunSpec Authorized Testing software from the vendors listed here or use any other test software that is capable of generating data in the SunSpec Modbus results reporting format. In addition to the SunSpec Express Test solution, by coordinating with SunSpec, SunSpec Authorized Testing Laboratories may provide SunSpec Modbus for IEEE 1547 certification as part of their UL 1741 SB validation service.

“The SunSpec Alliance is committed to accelerating the growth of the distributed energy industry by establishing standards that enable safe and secure DER device interoperability and grid operation.” said Dylan Tansy, Executive Director of SunSpec Alliance, “This new SunSpec Modbus certification pathway gives our members a fast and reliable option for testing and certifying their products, helping them to get to market faster with higher quality and improve the nation’s energy grid.”
