Webinar Recap: Mid-Year Standards Update

June 17, 2026

Overview

The SunSpec Alliance Mid-Year Standards Update webinar highlighted the latest progress across SunSpec’s standards development efforts, certification programs, and global initiatives designed to advance interoperability and cybersecurity for distributed energy resources.

A major milestone was the advancement of the Secure SunSpec Modbus Test Procedures into TEST status. The new test procedures, available for public review through August 1, 2026, provide a standardized path for validating secure SunSpec Modbus implementations using mutual TLS encryption and role-based access control while maintaining compatibility with existing SunSpec Modbus devices.

The webinar also introduced development of a new SunSpec Modbus Grid Forming Model to standardize communications for grid-forming inverters, along with the SunSpec Modbus for Poland Profile, which has entered TEST status to support emerging regulatory requirements in the Polish market. Attendees were encouraged to participate in both development efforts by providing feedback and joining the work groups.

Additional updates included progress on the next generation of CSIP Test Procedures, expanded IEEE 2030.5 interoperability testing, and the announcement that Version 2.0 of the IEEE 2030.5 Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Profile for SAE J3072 has entered TEST status with public review open through August 15, 2026.

The session concluded with an update on SunSpec Europe, which will establish a permanent European presence to support regional standards development, cybersecurity initiatives, and open-source reference implementations while helping manufacturers navigate evolving European regulatory requirements.
