Dear *|FNAME|*,

With SunSpec Membership and Certification numbers growing at unprecedented levels, the team is hard at work developing resources to further support our members and benefit the broader SunSpec ecosystem. From SunSpec Modbus, to DER Cybersecurity and 2030.5 Profiles for Vehicle to Grid (V2G) and EV Charging applications, SunSpec is committed to providing technical coverage on cutting-edge topics and equipping our Members with the tools needed to thrive in a dynamic regulatory environment.

As part of our effort to deliver top-level support, SunSpec will be launching a suite of online and in-person resources included with membership and available to purchase for non-members in the coming year. Among these developments will be on-demand technical training modules offered online through the SunSpec Academy, a database of videos and FAQs compiled under the SunSpec Knowledge Base, and a quarterly series of live group technical support workshops featuring the SunSpec engineering team.

With the anticipated mid-2022 deadline for UL 1741 SB Certification rapidly approaching and the need for SunSpec Modbus for IEEE 1547 implementation support in high demand, the first technical support workshop will be hosted on March 8th, 2022. Available as a benefit of SunSpec Membership, this workshop is an opportunity to get live support in a group setting from the SunSpec engineering team and Principal Engineer, Bob Fox.
*This is not a presentation— Participants should come prepared with their own technical questions and be ready to engage with their SunSpec piers.

For those who are interested in acquiring technical training and education resulting in college accreditation, we are excited to announce that Spring Quarter at UC San Diego Extension is now open. Enroll now in one or more of the following SunSpec courses:

Live Group Technical Support Workshop

SunSpec is hosting an open-ended, live group technical support workshop for implementation teams to bring their technical questions to the SunSpec engineering team and Principal Engineer, Bob Fox. This support workshop is included with SunSpec Membership and is available to non-members for purchase.

This is not a presentation— Participants should come prepared with their own technical questions and be ready to interact with their peers on the SunSpec engineering team.

  • This is the first of a four-part series of SunSpec support workshops that will be offered quarterly.
  • Non-members must purchase tickets to attend.
  • Attendees may drop-in at anytime within the 4 hr window to ask their questions, or stay and listen as long as preferred.

SunSpec & Sandia DER Cybersecurity Webinar:

Cryptographic, Protected Processors for DER Authentication, Control, easurement, and Attestation

This briefing by the The Trusted Computing Group’s (TCG) Measurement and Attestation RootS (MARS) Work Group will introduce Measurement and Attestation (M&A) concepts, relevant use cases and a simplified MARS architecture. Attendees will understand the need for M&A and that it can be enabled by microcontroller manufacturers with little overhead. That is especially true for those already including cryptographic accelerators, as is commonplace.

Speaker: Tom Broström, Chair of the MARS Work Group in the Trusted Computing Group (TCG)

QualityLogic Now Offering IEEE 1547.1 Training Workshops

QualityLogic has announced a new training workshop for companies interested in learning about the IEEE 1547.1 / UL 1741 SB-based standards and certification testing. The Workshop is of particular interest to SunSpec members and any company required to meet UL 1741 SB requirements.

IEEE 1547-2018 introduced significant new testing challenges for the inverter industry,
including revised Type testing and Interoperability testing using one of the protocols
specified in the standard. QualityLogic’s training workshop will provide attendees with a deeper understanding of the protocols and the technical skills needed to conduct the testing defined in UL 1741 SB.

Workshop Contents
  • A basic understanding of IEEE 1547-2018, 1547.1-2020 and UL 1741 SB advanced functionality and interoperability test requirements
  • Specific test requirements for Type and Interoperability tests
  • An introduction to all three interoperability protocols (IEEE 2030.5, SunSpec Modbus, and DNP3)
  • Automating the UL 1741 SB testing using the QualityLogic test tools, including the management of the test equipment (Grid/DC simulators and data acquisition)
  • Capturing test results to support pass/fail analysis
The training is currently being made available as a private workshop dedicated to a
company’s team. With the ongoing pandemic limiting travel options, QualityLogic is offering the workshop over three days via Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

SUNSPEC WORK GROUP UPDATES

Gain access to valuable information by becoming a Member of the SunSpec Alliance and joining a SunSpec Work Group. The work groups listed below are currently active and meeting to address the following objectives:
At the end of 2021, the SunSpec (Modbus) Device Interface work group completed development of the SunSpec information models required by DER devices for IEEE 1547-2018 compliance (“700 series”) and refined the battery energy storage models (“800 series”) to better support multiple chemistry types and complex system configurations. The group is now working on a RESTful Web Services interface for devices that can be used as an alternative to the traditional Modbus interface.
The IEEE 2030.5 / SAE J3072 EV Charging Profile Work Group has just published the first draft of the IEEE 2030.5 V2G AC Profile for public comment. This work group will be reconvening in March of 2022 to review comments and update the draft.
The SunSpec & Sandia DER Cybersecurity Work Group is convening in February of 2022 to develop a document describing utility/aggregator security evaluations.
The SunSpec IEEE 2030.5 Conformance Profiles Work Group is now meeting to update the testing procedures for all profiles.
Stay tuned for an update on the current status of the SunSpec Rapid Shutdown Work Group.
The Orange Button Work Group has concluded its work and has transformed into an open source community. Please contact Membership@SunSpec.org if you would like to participate.
