Dear SunSpec Members and Followers,

As we enter the summer solstice and set our sights on the year’s finish line, it is with great excitement that we announce the completion of a major 2022 goal on behalf of the
IEEE 2030.5 / SAE J3072 EV Charging Profile Work Group. Just this week, the work group officially promoted its IEEE 2030.5 V2G-AC Profile Implementation Guide for SAE J3072 from DRAFT to TEST status. In SunSpec terminology, this means that while not permanently frozen from technical revisions, the specification is ready to be implemented in demonstration projects, field tests, and early deployments. We encourage all interested parties to download the document, implement the profile, and submit comments

With EV and EVSE technology becoming a top priority for government and industry alike (see this recent fact-sheet from the Biden-Harris Administration), the need to standardize EVSE to PEV communications is more relevant than ever. This abstract provides an overview of the profile’s scope:

“This profile serves to assist EVSE and PEV manufacturers, operators, and system integrators to implement the SAE J3072 requirements using the IEEE 2030.5 protocol. SAE J3072 establishes requirements for a grid support inverter system function which is integrated into a plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) which connects in parallel with an electric power system (EPS) by way of conductively coupled, electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE).” In a nutshell, adoption of this standard enables electric vehicles to both charge from- and discharge to the electrical grid, thus providing an important tool for maintaining grid health and optimizing EV charging.

In addition to celebrating this achievement, we are pleased to announce a “save the date” for the 2022 Annual SunSpec Member Meeting, which will be held on December 7th and 8th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Please add the date to your calendar and stay tuned for more details. It is going to be fun!

As always, do not hesitate to contact Membership@SunSpec.org with questions, concerns, or requests. Now is a more exciting time than ever to join the Alliance and help grow the DER and V2G industries!

Kind Regards,

Tom Tansy

SUNSPEC WORK GROUP UPDATES

Gain access to valuable information by becoming a Member of the SunSpec Alliance and joining a SunSpec Work Group. The work groups listed below are currently active and meeting to address the following objectives:

To prepare for the next generation of device integration, the SunSpec (Modbus) Device Interface work group is now working on a RESTful Web Services interface for devices that can be used as an alternative to the traditional Modbus interface.

In June, 2022, the IEEE 2030.5 / SAE J3072 EV Charging Profile Work Group promoted its IEEE 2030.5 / V2G AC Profile from DRAFT to TEST. The profile is now ready for implementation and testing.

The SunSpec & Sandia DER Cybersecurity Work Group has a full slate of monthly webinars on all aspects of DER security and has convened a sub-group to define requirements for an open source security-readiness assessment tool.

The SunSpec IEEE 2030.5 Conformance Profiles Work Group is now meeting to update the testing procedures for all profiles.

The SunSpec Rapid Shutdown Work Group is refining test procedures and working on a collaborative marketing program to spread the word about open standards.

SunSpec is inviting companies that serve the Australian market to come discuss the most pressing concerns of the rapidly growing Australian DER market and contribute to the proposed formation of the SunSpec Australian Market Advisory Council. Among other items, the mission of this work group will be to launch the SunSpec 2030.5 CSIP-AUS Certification Program.

To enable DERs to reach their full potential and address growing threats, SunSpec is forming the Cybersecurity Certification Work Group to create a cybersecurity certification option for products receiving IEEE 2030.5 certification. To help make the program a reality, SunSpec is partnering with Lumian Foundation, a new consortium spun out of the SunSpec Blockchain Work Group.
