Dear *|FNAME|*,

Six years ago, California Rule 21 adopted IEEE 2030.5, SunSpec started certifying IEEE 2030.5 devices (that also comply with Common Smart Inverter Profile “CSIP”), and introduced the SunSpec Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). To date, we have issued 76 CSIP Certifications, the IEEE 2030.5-2023 standard is nearly final, work on CSIP 3.0 is beginning, PKI upgrades are underway, and IEEE 1547-2018 is almost universally adopted across the U.S. With all this progress, questions remain about how utilities and grid operators will deploy network-capable DER systems.

Important Updates Coming in June

In the next few weeks, California IOUs will likely release advice letters on the IEEE 2030.5 rollout and need for a CSIP 3.0 update to reflect publication of the IEEE 2030.5-2023 standard, followed by a CPUC comment period for industry feedback. A critical question on the horizon is “How can CSIP 3.0 be updated quickly?” without causing deployment delays. SunSpec is ready to take the lead, ensuring that our push for standardization continues to support industry growth. On June 19 at 10 AM, SunSpec will host a webinar to discuss CSIP 3.0. Be on the lookout for an invitation to register.

On the SunSpec Modbus for IEEE 1547 front, the Alliance and our peers at EPRI continue to make strides to improve communication protocol- and functional interoperability. Please join us at our upcoming IEEE 1547 webinar on June 4 at 9 AM Pacific to learn about the latest improvements. As we have stated many times, IEEE 1547 communication interfaces that are tested and certified save product development teams many man months in testing effort per development cycle and accelerates time to market.

SunSpec Annual Meeting: Going Back To La Jolla/San Diego!

One of the best SunSpec Annual meetings ever was our 10th anniversary event in lovely La Jolla, California. The atmosphere (and weather) was fantastic, the content was enriching, and the camaraderie enjoyed with fellow members was unparalleled. Seeking to improve on that experience, we are happy to invite you to join us at the iconic Grande Colonial Hotel on December 3-5, 2024. Registration and Early Bird pricing will be available soon.

Welcome Sam Reid!

We are thrilled to introduce Sam Reid, our new content and marketing strategist. Sam’s extensive research experience will help us better understand and meet your needs. Look out for surveys and opportunities to share your feedback.

At SunSpec, our goal is to advance the DER industry through interoperability and cybersecurity, serving as a hub for our Members. Thank you for your continued support!

Best,
Dylan Tansy

U.S. State-Level Adoption of IEEE 1547-2018 Nears Completion

As of March 2024, 23 state public utility commissions, and many other states that follow the rules of the independent system operator or power authority, had either fully or partially adopted IEEE 1547-2018 and the corresponding UL 1741 SB safety standard. A review of the California Energy Commission approved equipment list indicates that the number of inverters that comply with the older IEEE 1547-2014 and UL 1741 SA standards is diminishing, thus indicating that vendors are rapidly reducing their inventories of older equipment. Before long, only IEEE 1547-2018 inverters will be readily available in the market. Companies that have not yet completed the transition should contact membership@sunspec.org to learn how SunSpec can help accelerate your entry into the market.

IEEE 2030.5-2023 Standard Is Going To Print

After more than two years of development, the IEEE 2030.5 DER data communication standard, officially adopted as a national standard in the U.S., Canada, and Australia, has been revised, approved, and is in the process of being published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers as IEEE 2030.5-2023. You can expect to be able to purchase this document from IEEE.org in Q1 2024.

This is a landmark achievement for the DER industry because it consolidates requirements that were revealed in the initial implementation of the technology in California and Australia, memorializes device aggregation as an official architectural element, and adds requirements for price signalling and market engagement. Like all IEEE standard revisions, this one is “backward compatible,” meaning that functionality you have grown to rely on is unaltered. SunSpec supports this standard with profile development, public key infrastructure security services and a certification program. Contact membership@sunspec.org if you would like more information.

Introducing the SunSpec Device Cybersecurity Certification Program

The SunSpec Device Cybersecurity Certification program is now under way and is setting the foundation for the national Distribute Energy Resource fleet. Intertek EWA-Canada has been approved as the first qualified SunSpec Authorized Testing Laboratory for cybersecurity and is serving customers now. The video of the program launch event describes what is covered in the program now and what’s coming next. Please contact membership@sunspec.org if you would like more information.
